Aliou Cissé Parts Ways with Libya

Aliou Cissé has officially stepped down as the head coach of the Libya national team. The announcement came this Wednesday, marking the conclusion of a brief  chapter for the Mediterranean Knights. This, following rumours of more than 8 months of unpaid salary.

Cissé took to his official handles to confirm his departure, expressing deep gratitude for his time in Tripoli.

“This adventure has been incredibly enriching,” Cissé shared in his post. “I am grateful to the players, the staff, and the fans who welcomed me. My relationship with the Libya Football Federation (LFF) concludes here, but I leave with fond memories and a belief in the potential of this group.”

Cissé, renowned for his tenure with the Senegal national team where he secured an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2021, was brought in to instill discipline and a winning culture within a Libyan side seeking consistency.

The LFF has yet to name a successor, but the search begins immediately as the team looks towards upcoming continental qualifiers.

Aliou Cissé oversaw a total of ten matches at the helm of the Libyan national team. Under his leadership, the squad managed to secure three victories and played out five draws, suffering two defeats throughout his tenure. The team’s offensive output saw them find the back of the net nine times, while the defensive line conceded seven goals and managed to keep three clean sheets. Cissé’s departure leaves him as one of the most sought-after free agents in Africa
