Cameroon-Born Embolo Denied U.S. Visa as Switzerland Face World Cup Setback
Switzerland have been hit with an unexpected disruption ahead of their World Cup preparations after star striker Breel Embolo, born in Cameroon, was denied clearance to travel to the United States with the national team.
The 29-year-old forward, a key figure in Switzerland’s attack and one of their most experienced international players, was prevented from boarding the team flight after his U.S. travel authorisation was placed under administrative review at the last minute.
According to reports, Embolo’s Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) had initially been approved, but was suddenly flagged for further scrutiny just hours before departure, forcing the Swiss squad to leave without him.
The issue is believed to be linked to a past legal case involving a 2018 incident in Basel, which resulted in a 2023 conviction for making threats and a suspended fine. The ruling was later upheld after appeal proceedings were exhausted, making it a final judgment.
The Swiss Football Association confirmed the situation, stressing that they are in contact with U.S. authorities and remain hopeful that the matter will be resolved quickly so Embolo can rejoin the squad in camp.
Despite the setback, officials expect the issue to be temporary, with the possibility of Embolo travelling to join the team in the coming days once clearance is granted.
Born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Embolo moved to Europe at a young age before settling in Switzerland, where he rose through the youth ranks and became one of the country’s most important forwards. He has represented Switzerland at multiple major tournaments, including previous World Cups, and remains central to their plans going into the competition.
For Switzerland, the situation is an unwelcome distraction at a crucial stage of preparation. For Embolo, it is another unexpected hurdle in a career that has often combined footballing success with off-field complications now resurfacing at the worst possible moment.
