Congo Seeks Interpol Arrest Warrant for President Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas

Authorities in the Republic of the Congo have officially moved to escalate their pursuit of Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, the President of the Congolese Football Federation (Fecofoot), by applying to Interpol for an international arrest warrant.

The move follows Mayolas’ recent conviction for the embezzlement of $1.1 million in funds provided by FIFA, the world’s football governing body. The funds, intended for infrastructure development and the growth of the sport within the nation, were instead diverted through a web of financial irregularities that has left the domestic game in a state of paralysis.

Mayolas, once a powerful figure in Central African sports politics, has been under intense scrutiny for over a year. The investigation into Fecofoot’s finances revealed a systematic draining of resources meant for Forward development programs.

Despite his conviction, Mayolas reportedly fled the country before he could be taken into custody, prompting the Ministry of Justice and national law enforcement to seek international assistance.

The disappearance of $1.1 million has created a  vacuum within the Congolese football ecosystem, stalling progress across every level of the game. These funds were specifically earmarked for the FIFA Forward program, a critical lifeline designed to modernize training facilities in major hubs like Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Instead of rising steel and new turf, many projects remain abandoned shells of their intended designs.

Beyond infrastructure, the embezzlement has effectively throttled grassroots initiatives and youth academy development. Money that should have provided basic equipment and professional coaching certifications for rural provinces has vanished, leaving a generation of aspiring athletes without the resources to compete on a continental stage. This financial mismanagement also threatens the professionalization of the national league, as administrative oversight has weakened and several national team projects face indefinite delays due to the lack of liquidity.

The international community is watching closely. FIFA has historically maintained a zero tolerance policy regarding the misuse of its development grants. While the global body has not yet issued a formal suspension of Fecofoot, the issuance of an Interpol Red Notice would likely force their hand to appoint a Normalization Committee to oversee Congolese football operations.

If Interpol approves the request, Mayolas will be flagged in 196 member countries, making international travel nearly impossible and paving the way for his extradition back to Brazzaville to serve his sentence.

A multitude of the fans of theDiables Rouges, the hope remains that this legal crackdown will finally clear the path for a new era of transparency and success on the pitch.
