Early Exit for Dassi at PFL Africa event as Cameroon Turns Focus to Lagos Showdown
Cameroon’s push on the continental MMA stage hit a bump in Pretoria, where Emilios Dassi suffered a swift defeat during the Professional Fighters League (PFL) Africa event at SunBet Arena in Pretoria, South Africa.
The card, which marked the promotion’s arrival in South Africa, delivered a night of high-level competition—but for Dassi, it quickly unraveled. Entering the welterweight bracket with renewed ambition after falling short in last season’s semifinals, the Cameroonian prospect was looking to reestablish himself as a contender.

Instead, Angola’s Shido Boris Esperança dictated the pace from the outset. Carrying momentum from an impressive 11–1 record, Esperança leaned on his grappling advantage, executing a clean takedown before settling into dominant position. From there, he methodically broke Dassi down with ground strikes, forcing a first-round stoppage that underscored his credentials as a serious threat in the division.
The defeat leaves Dassi with questions to answer, particularly against opponents capable of controlling the fight on the mat. Despite the setback, his development path remains closely tied to the Francis Ngannou Foundation, which continues to shape a new wave of Cameroonian fighters inspired by Francis Ngannou.

While Pretoria belonged to Esperança, attention now shifts to Nigeria, where PFL Africa’s next event could signal a stronger Cameroonian showing. The promotion has increasingly leaned into the country’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for talent, with fan interest surging both locally and across the region.
That momentum will be tested in Lagos, as Cameroon’s Octave Ayinda prepares for a high-profile lightweight clash against Nigeria’s Patrick Ocheme. The matchup not only carries tournament implications but also adds another chapter to the intensifying rivalry between two of Africa’s most promising MMA nations.
For Cameroon, the narrative is shifting from disappointment to opportunity—one fight night away from a potential reset.
