Official: Véron Mosengo Resigns as CAF Secretary General
Véron Mosengo-Omba has officially resigned from his position as the Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The announcement, made via a press release dated March 29, 2026, marks the departure of one of the most polarizing and contested figures in the organization’s recent history.
In his official statement, Mosengo-Omba cited a desire to devote himself to more personal projects after a professional career spanning over three decades. While the letter maintains a tone of professional accomplishment, thanking CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe and his teams for their progress, the timing of the resignation is impossible to ignore. It comes at a moment when African football is deeply divided, most notably following the controversial AFCON title dispute between Senegal and Morocco.
Mosengo-Omba addressed the clouds hanging over his tenure directly, stating:
“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint.”
Mosengo-Omba’s time at the helm of CAF administration was frequently marked by intense scrutiny. Critics often pointed to his leadership style and the administrative handling of major tournaments as sources of friction between member nations. His departure follows heightened tension, specifically after Senegal’s defiant trophy parade in France, which many saw as a direct protest against the CAF administration’s handling of the 2025 AFCON final.
For many, Mosengo-Omba was seen as the face of the bureaucratic football. His resignation will likely be viewed by his detractors as a necessary step towards reforming the governance of the continent’s football.
Despite the controversies, Mosengo-Omba leaves behind a CAF that he describes as “more prosperous than ever.” He expressed hope that the progress made under his watch—ranging from commercial growth to organizational restructuring—will be sustained by his successors.
The resignation leaves a significant vacuum at the top of CAF’s executive branch. As the organization navigates the fallout from the Senegal-Morocco title dispute and prepares for the upcoming World Cup cycle, the search for a new Secretary General will be a defining moment for President Patrice Motsepe’s leadership.
Samson Adamu and Gelson Fernandes have emerged as the top candidates to replace Véron Mosengo-Omba as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Secretary General.
