CAF Champions League

Espérance De-Throne CAF CL Kings Ahly in Cairo

Espérance de Tunis  dumped the tournament’s most successful team, Al Ahly, out of the CAF Champions League. While Al Ahly’s Fortress Cairo is usually where dreams go to die for visiting teams, the Tunisian giants turned the script on its head with a thrilling 3–2 victory on the night, securing a 4–2 aggregate win.

The 12-time winners are left to pick up the pieces of a shattered campaign, while Espérance marches into the semi-finals with the momentum of a runaway freight train.

The second leg in Cairo was anything but a defensive sit-back from the visitors. Despite holding a narrow lead from the first leg, Espérance entered the Cairo International Stadium with an aggressive game plan that caught the Red Devils off guard.

From the opening whistle, the Tunisian side utilized a high-press that disrupted Al Ahly’s usual fluid build-up play, forcing uncharacteristic errors. Every time Al Ahly managed to find a spark of hope, Espérance responded with clinical counter-attacks, exploiting the gaps left by a desperate Egyptian defense.

Knocking out Al Ahly by scoring three goals on their own turf establishes Espérance as the definitive team to beat this season. The margin reflects a shift in momentum for North African football, proving that the gap at the top has closed.

The Egyptian side made a strong start with Trezeguet opening the scoring in the 10th minute, but the visitors surged in the second half. Florian Danho equalized in the 68th minute before Mohamed Tougai silenced the crowd from the penalty spot. Though Al Ahly leveled the night at 2–2 to set up a tense finish, Jelassi rose highest in the 90th minute to head home the winner.

Having cleared the biggest hurdle in African football, the Blood and Gold now look toward the semi-finals. They will face the winner of the quarter-final tie between Mamelodi Sundowns and Stade Malien, who play tomorrow.

If Espérance can dominate the reigning champions in Cairo, they will fear no one. Whether they face the tactical precision of the South Africans or the grit of the Malians, they have firmly re-established themselves as the giants of the continent.
