48 Nations Discover Group Stage Fate as AFCON 2027 Qualification Roadmap is Revealed
The roadmap to East Africa’s historic football showpiece is officially set. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducted the an anticipated group-stage draw for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) PAMOJA 2027 on Tuesday afternoon, mapping out a path for 48 nations across the continent.
The star-studded event, hosted at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters in Cairo, was conducted with the assistance of African football legends Max-Alain Gradel, William Troost-Ekong, Essam El Hadary, and Trésor Mputu.
The 48 participating nations—including five that successfully navigated the preliminary rounds—were divided into 12 groups of four.
Understanding The “Pamoja” Qualification route
The 2027 edition marks a milestone as a three-nation co-hosting venture between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under the banner of “Pamoja”.
While all three host nations receive automatic qualification to the 24-team tournament, they will still participate in the qualifying group stages to maintain competitive match sharpness. Consequently, a unique rule applies to their specific pools: In the standard groups, the top two teams will secure qualification to the finals.
In groups containing a co-host (Groups D, H, and L), only one other slot is available for the remaining three competitors, dramatically raising the stakes.

Headlines from the Draw
The West African Heavyweight Collision (Group C)
The standout narrative of the draw rests squarely in Group C, which features an absolute blockbuster pairing of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. A fierce regional rivalry and a rematch of the iconic 2015 AFCON final, this group is further complicated by a dangerous Gambia squad and an emerging Somalia making a return to the group qualifiers. Ghana will be looking to make their return after having missed out on Morocco 2025.
A Familiar Battleground in Group D
South Africa’s Bafana Bafana find themselves in a fascinating Group D landscape. They are pitted against regional power Guinea and co-hosts Kenya. Adding an extra layer of narrative flair, Kenya’s Harambee Stars are under the tactical guidance of former South African international icon Benni McCarthy. The group is rounded out by a resilient Eritrea side returning to the qualification fray.
Super Eagles Handed Tricky Fixtures (Group L)
Nigeria headlines a highly competitive Group L. The Super Eagles will square off against Madagascar—a team with a history of pulling off continental upsets—alongside Guinea-Bissau and co-hosts Tanzania. With Tanzania automatically through, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Guinea-Bissau face a brutal three-way shootout for the single remaining ticket.
The qualifying campaign will be condensed into a highly intense schedule played out over three distinct FIFA international windows:
Matchdays 1 & 2: September 21 – October 6, 2026
Matchdays 3 & 4: November 9 – 17, 2026
Matchdays 5 & 6: March 22 – 30, 2027
The final tournament is scheduled to take place in East Africa from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
