Ghana Stand Firm Against England to Reach the 2026 World Cup Knockout Stage
Ghana are through to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after producing a goalless draw against England in Foxborough.
Ghana arrived in Foxborough carrying the confidence of their 1-0 victory over Panama, a match decided by Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner. England, meanwhile, had announced themselves with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia. The Group L table made the stakes obvious.
England controlled possession from the opening whistle. Thomas Tuchel’s side pushed their full-backs high, Jude Bellingham looked to dictate the tempo, while Harry Kane searched constantly for spaces between Ghana’s centre-backs. Ghana, however, never allowed the game to become stretched. Every player knew his role. The defensive line held firm, the midfield tracked every runner, and England found themselves forced into attacks from wide areas rather than through the middle.
Thomas Partey’s return brought calm to Ghana’s midfield. His positioning repeatedly broke up England’s passing sequences, while his experience allowed Ghana to slow the tempo whenever pressure began to build. Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo worked tirelessly without the ball, often dropping deep before springing forward on the counter whenever possession was recovered.
England camped inside Ghana’s half, but clear-cut opportunities remained scarce. Ghana even threatened to steal the headlines when substitute Prince Kwabena Adu burst behind England’s defence before colliding with Jordan Pickford inside the penalty area. After a VAR review, play resumed without a penalty, much to England’s relief.
England’s best chance arrived six minutes from time. A powerful O’reilli’s header crashed against the crossbar before the rebound dropped invitingly for Harry Kane. With the goal at his mercy, the England captain blazed over the bar, drawing gasps from inside the stadium. It proved to be the last genuine opportunity of the afternoon.
The draw leaves Ghana on four points from two matches after a victory against Panama and a draw with England. England also sit on four points, while Croatia and Panama remain behind ahead of their meeting later in the evening. With only one round of fixtures remaining, Ghana can no longer be displaced from the qualification places and are officially through to the Round of 32.
Victory against Croatia would strengthen Ghana’s chances of finishing top higher on group L, a reward that could shape their route through the tournament.
For now, though, qualification is the only story that matters. Four years ago, Ghana watched the knockout rounds from home. This time, they will be part of them.
