Nicolás Pépé Double Fires Côte d’Ivoire into World Cup Knockout Stage

Côte d’Ivoire booked their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 32 with a composed 2-0 victory over Curaçao in Philadelphia, where Nicolás Pépé scored both goals to end the Caribbean nation’s dream debut campaign.

Knowing that victory would guarantee qualification regardless of events elsewhere in Group E, the Elephants wasted little time asserting themselves. Pépé opened the scoring in the seventh minute, punishing hesitant Curaçao defending with a clinical finish to settle Ivorian nerves early, after Diomande did the hard work on the left.

The Africans controlled much of the first half through the midfield partnership of Franck Kessié and Ibrahim Sangaré, while Amad Diallo and Yan Diomandé repeatedly stretched Curaçao’s back line. Despite their dominance, Eloy Room produced several important saves to keep the deficit at one heading into the interval.

Curaçao, needing nothing less than a win to stand any chance of reaching the knockout rounds, emerged with greater urgency after the restart. Tahith Chong and Juninho Bacuna tried to spark a comeback, but Côte d’Ivoire’s defence remained disciplined and rarely allowed clear openings.

The decisive moment arrived in the 64th minute. Pépé collected possession on the edge of the area before curling an excellent finish beyond Room to complete his brace and effectively end the contest. The winger’s second goal allowed Emerse Faé to rotate his squad, withdrawing Pépé, Ange-Yoan Bonny and Yan Diomandé as the Elephants comfortably managed the closing stages.

Curaçao continued to battle until the final whistle but could not find a breakthrough in what proved to be their final match of a memorable first World Cup appearance. Although they leave the tournament without progressing, the Caribbean side earned widespread admiration after recovering from a heavy opening defeat to Germany to hold Ecuador before pushing Côte d’Ivoire for long spells.

For Côte d’Ivoire, however, this was a historic evening. The victory secured second place in Group E behind Germany and sent the Elephants into the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time, with Pépé’s clinical brace providing the finishing touch to a disciplined and professional performance. They are set to meet France next.
