BREAKING: Samson Adamu named Interim CAF Secretary General
Samson Adamu, the CAF director of competitions and events has taken over the vacated CAF General secretary role following the departure of Swiss-Congolese official Véron Mosengo-Omba.
For weeks now, the search for a successor developed into a two-horse race between prominent figures with very different backgrounds.
In one corner was Gelson Fernandes, the former Swiss international who currently serves as FIFA’s Director of Member Associations for Africa. Fernandes represented a push for external reform and a closer alignment with FIFA’s global standards.
However, he was in direct contention with the Nigerian Samson Adamu, a veteran Director of Competitions at CAF. While Fernandes offered an outside perspective, Adamu’s deep-rooted institutional knowledge and his experience in managing the continent’s most prestigious tournaments made him a formidable internal candidate.
During today’s Executive Committee, one of the Executive Committee members left the meeting room, shortly after which Adamu was called in to attend the proceedings.
By giving Adamu the nod, CAF seems to be prioritizing stability and continuity, leaning on a seasoned insider to navigate the transition period following Mosengo-Omba’s departure.
